Feisty Faisal stings mighty Korea

DOHA: Faisal Halim, the diminutive winger, was like a busy little bee, buzzing into openings to sting football giants South Korea in an Asian Cup match at Al Janoub Stadium yesterday,

Faisal believes in the cliche "anything can happen" as long as you keep trying.

And so feisty Faisal never stopped trying as he prodded the Korean defence with his darting runs.

And this resulted in Faisal socring Malaysia's first goal, in the 51st minute, against South Korea in the rousing 3-3 draw in their last group E match in Qatar.

Faisal became the first Malaysian to score against the South Korea senior team since Dollah Salleh's winner in Malaysia's 1-0 win over them in a World Cup qualifier in 1986.

After Faisal's heroics, Arif Aiman Hanapi and Romel Morales scored a goal each to help World No 130. Malaysia force a draw against World No. 23 South Korea.

"In football anything can happen, we just keep giving our best," said Faisal.

"We have been given our responsibility and everyone fought hard."

He said coach Kim Pan Gon had planned for the match for days and explained to the players what was important and they discussed the mistakes from the first two games (the 4-0 loss to Jordan and 1-0 loss to Bahrain).

Faisal said they will build on what they learnt at the Asian Cup for the World Cup qualifiers against Oman away and at home next month.
