FAM sets semi-final target for Young Tigers in Under-23 Asian Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: FAM's target for its team is semi-final at the Asian Under-23 championship in Doha, Qatar, from April 15-May 3.

FAM president Datuk Hamidin Amin said the Young Tigers will play quality friendlies abroad as part of their preparations.

He said a top four finish in the Under-23 Asian Cup could lead to Malaysia earning a ticket to the Paris Olympics in July.

The top three teams in Doha will qualify for the Olympics while the fourth-placed Asian team will play off with the fourth-placed team from the Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations for the last ticket to Paris.

Hamidin said he believes that the Malaysia team, coached by Spaniard Juan Torres Garrido, could create history.

He said Malaysia will play in a quadrangular competition in Indonesia before heading to Doha for a series of friendlies and also to train there.

Malaysia are drawn in Group D of the Under-23 Asian Cup with Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Kuwait.

The Young Tigers' best result in the tournament was reaching the quarter-finals in 2018 before losing 2-1 to South Korea.
