Fans split over Pan Gon's future

KUALA LUMPUR: News of national football team head coach Kim Pan Gon's willingness to step down if he is no longer needed by the FA of Malaysia (FAM) has drawn various reactions from netizens.

A section of fans want Pan Gon to continue guiding the national squad while others believe 'his time' at the reins is over.

His supporters believe that the two defeats Malaysia suffered against Oman were not his fault. Irsha Shafika said it was not the coach who lacked quality but the players. Muhammad Hafiz was of the same view.

Arbain Ahmad said Pan Gon remains relevant while Mohammad Yusri said it would be a loss if FAM released him as he has a proven track record and the performance of the national team has not been too bad.

At the other end of the argument, Syah Radz agreed that it was time for Pan Gon to leave the squad as he had run out of ideas and tactics.

Zul Niin believes that it would be better if Pan Gon coached a big-name team in Asia that is of higher rank.

Earlier this week, a number of media outlets reported that Pan Gon was prepared to leave the national squad if his services were no longer required.

A source claimed that Pan Gon and his panel of coaches had sent a letter to the national body stating that they would only seek three-months compensation if FAM decided to terminate their services.

Pan Gon, however, issued a statement stressing that he is committed to continue guiding the Harimau Malaya squad until the end of his contract, which runs until the end of 2025.

He added that he did not send any letter to FAM stating that he wanted to leave the national team.
