'I know people don't like me, it's okay'

KUALA LUMPUR: Team captain Mukhairi Ajmal Mahadi admitted his performance was poor in Malaysia's disastrous Under-23 Asian Cup campaign in Doha.

The Young Tigers lost all their group matches, 2-0 to both Uzbekistan and Vietnam, and 2-1 to Kuwait.

Malaysia failed to avoid finishing bottom of Group D in losing to Kuwait in their last match yesterday.

Mukhairi, whose team came under heavy criticism from fans, said he did not play well throughout the tournament.

The midfielder appeared dejected in an interview with Astro Arena after the Kuwait match.

"I'm disappointed with myself. It was not a good day for me.

"Maybe this is not the best place for me, maybe elsewhere. I know people don't like me, it's okay. I hope this will help me improve myself.

"I feel like I played poorly in every match. Besides, we haven't started the M-League season yet, so we don't have good match fitness.

"But people expect me to perform, they think I'm the only one playing on the field. Because I've been around for a long time, I have to take responsibility as captain."
