Paisley leads opening day of Maybank Championship

SHAH ALAM: Englishman Chris Paisley played impeccable golf for a bogey-free seven-under 65 on a weather-hit opening day of the Maybank Championship on Thursday.

Paisley, who won his maiden European Tour win at the South African Open last month, said: “I just played really solid, hit it well off the tee and gave myself a lot of birdie chances.

"It was very hot and not much wind, so scoring wise was quite easy but it was quite difficult to keep focus due to the heat.” said Paisley, who finished fifth in last week’s Dubai Desert Classic.

An hour and 50 minutes of play was lost due to the threat of storms in the afternoon and 40 players will return to complete their first round on Friday.

Frenchman Mike Lorenzo-Vera was on six-under with two holes left to complete, alongside another Englishman, David Horsey, who recovered from an opening bogey to end on six-under.

Gavin Green was Malaysia’s best performer with a bogey-free four-under 68 for joint-10th.

“I am happy with my opening day play,” said Gavin.
