Campillo and Frittelli share lead at Maybank Championship

KUALA LUMPUR: Spain’s Jorge Campillo and South Africa Dylan Frittelli each fired a six-under 66 on Saturday to share the lead going into the final day of the Maybank Championship at the Saujana Golf & Country Club.

The duo played spotless golf for a bogey-free round to sit at 15-under.

Campillo, seeking an elusive first European Tour win in his 196th event, eagled the first hole and recorded four birdies to give himself a good chance in the tournament.

"It was good. Played solid for most of the round,” said Campillo.

“I had a few tough holes but I managed to make the putts so overall I played solid.

“(Eagle on hole 1) I hit a perfect driver and a nice six iron to about four or five metres and made that one. Always nice to start with eagle. I’m really looking forward to tomorrow. It is a nice position to be and I’m excited.”

Frittelli, who won the Mauritius Open and Lyoness Open last year, started slowly but six birdies helped him get back in contention.

“I started off a bit slow but some good birdies in the middle part of the round kept me going.

“I think a lot of the guys are getting frustrated with the greens and I’m just trying to stay as positive as I can, and just try and speak to them nice and get the ball to go in the hole,” said World No 47 Frittelli.

American Berry Henson is joint-third with India’s Khalin Joshi at 14-under.

Overnight leaders Phachara Khongwatmai of Thailand and Nino Bertasio of Italy dropped to joint-fifth after managing 70 on Saturday for a 13-under 203 total.

Only two Malaysians in Gavin Green and Amir Nazrin will play in the final round on Sunday.

Gavin, the reigning Asian Tour champion, carded three-under 69 for a 10-under 206 total while Amir is on four-under 212.

“I am disappointed that I did not record a good round today. I may have a chance if I can get off to a good start tomorrow,” said Gavin.
