Asian Tour to add one more Malaysian event to 2019 calendar

KUALA LUMPUR: Following the announcement of the inaugural US$300,000 (RM1.2 million) Sarawak Championship at Damai Golf and Country Club on July 4-7, the Asian Tour plans to add another event in Malaysia to its roster.

The Tour’s chief executive officer, Josh Burack, said the Tour is continually working on creating more tournaments on a global basis with Malaysia serving as an important market due to the country’s high quality golf courses, warm hospitality and reasonable travel and accommodation costs.

“We are delighted to be staging a brand new event in Malaysia this season called The Sarawak Championship.

“We are also in discussion with some sponsors and with the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM), whom the Asian Tour has a close relationship with, to create at least one addition event in Malaysia for 2019,” he said.

Currently, Malaysia host two major events: Asian Tour-European Tour Maybank Championship and PGA Tour’s CIMB Classic aside from 13 Asian Development Tour competitions.

Burack predicts the Asian Tour’s schedule will expand in 2019 as they have already confirmed an addition event in Vietnam with possible expansions in China.

“We went from 24 tournaments on our main tour in 2016 to 29 events in 2017 and this year, we expect to have at least 32 tournaments in 2018.”
