BARELY a day after the Maybank Championship was postponed due to Covid-19, the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) held a press conference to confirm that the Malaysian Open will proceed as scheduled.
On Friday, the Asian Tour and the European Tour accepted a request from title sponsor and promoter Maybank to postpone the Maybank Championship, which was initially scheduled on April 16-19 at the Saujana Golf and Country Club, due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
MGA, however, took a braver stand with due precautions added in.
Addressing the concerns over the Covid-19 situation, MGA president Admiral (Rtd) Tan Sri Anwar Mohamad Nor said: “The health and safety of players and audience remain the number one priority of the MGA.
“With strict measures in place, as guided by the Health Ministry, we will provide initial medical care in the event of illness,” he said yesterday.
Asian Tour commissioner and CEO Cho Minn Thant said: “We are very much aligned with the decision made by MGA and with the stringent measures put in place during the week.
“We are adopting similar operational procedures at all upcoming events to improve the safety of stakeholders and participants.”
The Malaysian Open will be held at the Kota Permai GCC on March 5-8.
