Malaysian Mirabel wins Valspar golf title in US

KUALA LUMPUR: National No. 1 amateur women's golfer Mirabel Ting continues to make waves in the United States collegiate golf scene.

Yesterday, the 18-year-old Sarawakian clinched her second title by winning the Valspar Augusta Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club in Georgia.

Representing Florida State University, Mirabel closed with a flourishing third and final round of five-under 67 to finish atop the 93-player leaderboard with an aggregate of seven-under 209.

This secured her a two-shot win over Hannah Darling of the University of South Carolina, Loralie Cowart (University of Georgia) and Natacha Husted (University of Mississippi).

Both Darling and Husted are first-ranked women's amateur golfers of Scotland and Denmark respectively.

It was a well-deserved victory for Mirabel after starting the year strongly with two seventh-place finishes at the Moon Golf Invitational in Florida and Collegiate Invitational at Guadalara Country Club in Mexico.

"This is definitely another week to remember," said Mirabel in the University of Florida's athletics website seminoles.com

"Being able to come back to this event, it feels great. This week, I did really well from tee to green and some putts dropped for me. The conditions out there were difficult but staying patient carried me to the win."

Mirabel had previously claimed her maiden victory at the Moon Golf Invitational in February last year, then donning the Augusta University colours.

She enjoyed an exceptional year as a 'freshman' (first-year) with the Georgia-based institution, complementing the victory with another five top-10 finishes.

This earned her the All-American honours from the Women's Golf Coaches Association for the 2022-23 season.
