Malaysia's Jeneath comes out on top in Silicon Valley

KUALA LUMPUR: Another tournament, another Malaysian stamped her mark on the United States golf scene.

After Mirabel Ting, this time it was Jeneath Wong who made Malaysia proud when she came out on top in the Silicon Valley Showcase in California yesterday,

Jeneath, a second-year student at Pepperdine University, shot a final round of 70 to finish the 54-hole contest on seven-under 206 at Green Hills Country Club.

Jeneath finished a convincing four shots ahead of Riana Mission from the University of San Francisco, who finished solo second after a closing 71.

It was Jeneath's maiden title after 16 outings for Pepperdine University, just a week after she clinched a career-best runner-up finish at The Show at Spanish Trail in Las Vegas.

Boosted by Jeneath's individual brilliance, Pepperdine University also went on to seal the team title with a five-over 857 total, winning by a whopping 35 shots from the University of California.

With Jeneath and Mirabel on the national team, Malaysia did well to win a team silver during the Hanoi Sea Games in 2022. Jeneath also claimed an individual bronze at that time.

Jeneath and Mirabel's strong development certainly augur well for Malaysia and spark hopes of the country having a bigger representation on the international stage at the highest level.

Currently, Kelly Tan and Natasha Andrea Oon play professionally on the LPGA Tour while Ashley Lau and Alyaa Abdulghany ply their trade on the second-tier Epson Tour, the official qualifying tour for the LPGA.

Before turning professional, Natasha, Ashley and Alyaa had illustrious collegiate careers in the US.
