Gavin achieves season-best finish at Indian Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Golfer Gavin Green secured his season-best effort on the DP World Tour by finishing joint fifth at the Indian Open in New Delhi on Sunday.

The 30-year-old battled to a final round two-over 74 at DLF Golf and Country Club to finish on 12-under 276, five shots adrift of runaway winner Keita Nakajima of Japan."

Nakajima, a rookie on the circuit, shot a 73 for a 271 total to win by four shots from India's Veer Ahlawat, Sweden's Sebastian Soderberg and American Johanes Veerman.

Although finishing in the top five for the first time in 17 months may seem like a commendable result, Gavin knew the day could have ended better.

Sitting solo second and four shots back of Nakajima at the 54-hole mark, Gavin entered the finale with an outside chance to fight for an elusive victory in the European circuit.

Gavin started the day brightly by birdieing the opening hole, but four dropped strokes, including a bogey on the third and a triple bogey on the sixth, shattered any remaining hopes of contending for a win.

Gavin, who was runner-up in 2017, secured four more birdies but also squandered another three shots, including a double bogey on the 10th hole.

Gavin has played 11 events this year, making seven cuts with five of them being no worse than the 12th spot.
