Spain beat India to finish third in Junior World Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: Nicolas Alvarez was the star as his brace earned Spain a 3-1 win over two-time champions India to finish third in the Junior World Cup (JWC) at the National Hockey Stadium, Bukit Jalil, today.

Spain goalkeeper Jan Capelldes suffered food poisoning on Friday, yet he played between the posts to stop India from scoring more than a goal.

Alvarez scored the opening goal from a reverse stick shot past India goalkeeper Shasikumar Mohith in the 25th minute.

However, India drew level in the 32 minute through Sunil Jojo's penalty corner attempt.Eight minutes later, Spain regained their lead through Pau Petchame, who scored from close range.

Alvarez added the third with a solo effort in the 51st minute for Spain.Spain coach Oriol Puig Torras said his side played their best game of the tournament in the second half.

"Our goalkeeper Capelldes suffered from food poisoning and only slept two hours the night before the final. Yet, he played well to deny India.""We are happy to win our second bronze in the competition."
