Malaysia lose to 'war-torn' Ukraine in women's Olympic Qualifier

KUALA LUMPUR: How low can Malaysian hockey go?

On Saturday, the Speedy Tigresses were humiliated 2-1 by lowly Ukraine as the Malaysian team finished last in the eight-team women's Olympic qualifying tournament in Valencia, Spain.

World No. 30 Ukraine scored through Anastasiia Voievoda (45th minute) and Valerie Rudychenko (52nd).

Fatin Sukri scored a consolation for world No. 20 Malaysia in the 60th minute.

Nasihin Nubli's side lost all five matches in the tournament, scoring only 2 goals and conceding 23.

The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) spent RM500,000 to send the women's team to Valencia.

"My players gave their best in the tournament, especially against Ukraine. It is a young team, and they will learn from this experience," said coach Nasihin.
