Coach Arul will know his fate soon

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) Coaching Committee will decide national coach A. Arul Selvaraj's fate in two weeks' time.

Arul's job is in limbo after Malaysia failed to qualify for the Paris Olympics. He was hired as national coach in July, 2020.

Arul had set a target of finishing top two in last week's Olympic Qualifier in Muscat, Oman, but the Speedy Tigers could only finish a disappointing fifth in the eight-nation tournament.

They lost to China (3-2), Britain (4-1) and drew with Pakistan (3-3) in group matches.

World champions Germany, Britain and New Zealand qualified from Muscat for the Olympics.

Arul is paid RM50,000 monthly by MHC to improve the standards of the national team, but the results have been disappointing.

Arul's target was to win the Asian Games gold in Hangzhou last October and qualify for the Paris Olympics but Malaysia finished a dismal sixth.

Coaching Committee chairman Datuk Majid Manjit Abdullah said Arul needs to submit a written report to them on why the team failed to qualify for the Olympics.

"We will have a meeting in two weeks' time and decide Arul's fate with the national team."

When asked whether MHC will hire a new coach to replace Arul, Manjit said they have not discussed the matter.
