A crazy day for Malaysian women in Muscat

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia women's team had a bizarre day at the Hockey 5s World Cup in Muscat, Oman yesterday.

They thrashed Oman 10-0 in the morning in a Group A match but were demolished 10-0 by the Dutch later in the day.

Against Oman, on target for Malaysia were Zati Alyani Zubir (four goals, in the 10th, 11th, 22nd and 25th minutes), Nur Zafirah (11th, 13th, 27th), Qhairunisya Zanili (16th, 30th) and Dian Nursyakira Najwa Al-Wadqa Nazeri (22nd).

Malaysia got a dose of their own medicine from the Dutch women who ran riot with goals from Lana Kalse (ninth, 20th), Bente van der Veldt (11th, 17th), Sosha Benninga (13th, 28th), Floor de Hann (11th), Janneke van de Venne (15th), Danique van der Veerdonk (23rd) and Noor de Baat (25th).

Malaysia coach Nabil Fiqri Noor said he never expected his team to get hammered by the Netherlands.

"We had a chance to score in the early part of the match but failed to do so, and instead they punished us by scoring 10 goals due to our errors in defence.

"We need to beat Fiji (today) to finish top two in the group to book our place in the quarter-finals."
