Captain Marhan wants Malaysia to redeem themselves in Muscat

KUALA LUMPUR: Captain Marhan Jalil has the responsibility of leading the Speedy Tigers to a top three placing in the Olympic Qualifier in Muscat, Oman, from Jan 15-21.

Anything less will see Malaysia failing in their sixth attempt in ending a 24-year absence from the Olympics.

Defender Marhan admitted that the pressure will be on his team to defy the odds.

Malaysia failed to meet their earlier target of booking an Olympic ticket (by winning the Asiad gold in Hangzhou last October) after finishing a disappointing sixth.

"Muscat is our last chance. We want to redeem our pride by qualifying for Paris," said Marhan who has been the captain since 2020.

"The team are all fired up to do well. We know what to expect in Oman."

World No. 12 Malaysia will play No. 23 China on Jan 15, No. 4 Great Britain on Jan 16 and No. 16 Pakistan on Jan 18 in Group A. Group B comprises world champions Germany, Canada, Chile and New Zealand.

Marhan is set to reach the 300 caps milestone in Oman, having represented Malaysia 297 times.

He said Malaysia have a good chance of qualifying for the Olympics from Jul 26-Aug 11 based on their grouping.

"We have beaten China and Pakistan before, and we can do it again.

"But we will face a tough task against higher-ranked Britain.

"We need to finish top two in our group to secure a place in the semi-finals."
