Malaysia to advertise for chief hockey coach

KUALA LUMPUR: The hockey world has heard about Malaysia looking for a new national chief coach following a series of disastrous results.

Two Europeans have applied to be the national men's team head coach even before the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) advertises on its website tomorrow.

The two coaches aside, MHC Coaching Committe chairman Datuk Majid Manjit Abdullah said: ''We want candidates to submit their application in a week's time. All local and foreign coaches can apply for the job by Feb 12.

"Once we get the applications, we will go through it before calling for an interview. We want a head coach by next month as the national team have two assignments in May - the Sultan Azlan's Shah cup in Ipoh (from May 4-11) and the Nations Cup in Poland (from May 31-June 9).

"The head coach will oversee the national men's senior and junior teams. The head coach will appoint his assistant and also the junior coaches.

''The head coach will be given a four years' contract until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

MHC disbanded both the national senior team (under coach A. Arul Selvaraj) and junior men's team last week after their failures in the Olympic Qualifier in Muscat, Oman last month, and the Junior World Cup in Bukit Jalil last December respectively.

Manjit added that the head coach will select the national team based on players' performances in the ongoing Malaysia Hockey League.
