SEPANG: The Formula 4 South East Asia (F4 SEA) race, a support event at the Petronas Malaysia Formula One Grand Prix, ground to an embarrassing halt at the Sepang Circuit today.
A fuel miscalculation saw the majority of cars competing ending up stranded on the track as they ran out of fuel in the sixth lap of the third race.
The race organiser decided to end the race then, with the final results being taken from the drivers’ position as they crossed the line on lap five.
Singapore’s Danial Frost, who finished second in the first two races held earlier today, was declared the winner of the third race.
Danial admitted that it was a strange race.
"It was a very interesting day, to say the least," said the 16-year-old.
"Race 3 was immediately after Race 2, which was challenging, as there was not a lot of time to rest in between.
"I managed a great start and was able to pull away from everyone. After the half-way point though, I saw the driver behind me slow down, and then not long after, I did as well.
"I was made to understand that there was a fuel miscalculation and everyone was affected. We were not aware of how this happened, as we were all following the set schedule.
"It was a disappointing way to end the race, but on a positive note, I am happy with the result that was declared,” Danial added.
The first race, which was scheduled to be held after the second F1 free practice yesterday, was brought over to today due to the accident involving Haas F1 driver Romain Grosjean. – With additional reporting by SAIFUL AFFENDY SAPRAN
