SEA Games, Asean Para Games torch arrives in Perlis

KANGAR: The 29th SEA Games and ninth Asean Para Games torch has finally reached the northern state this evening.

The torch, which was carried by Sarawak Assistant State Youth and Sports Minister Snowdan Lawan, was passed over to Perlis representative at 6.15pm.

Snowdan and four other members of the Sarawak delegates received warm welcome from their Perlis counterpart as soon as they arrived in a boat at the state's water at Sungai Padang, Kuala Perlis.

Present was Youth and Sports Ministry's Strategic deputy secretary general Haslina Abdul Hamid.

The delegate was later taken to the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) complex and escorted by seven sail boats and 13 canoes in the torch run flag-off gimmick.

The delegates were then given a tour across Kuala Perlis town and later joined by a convoy of 14 classic cars and 13 motorcycles.

Perlis is the seventh destination in the torch relay which was scheduled to be completed in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya on August 12.

Kuala Perlis assemblyman Mat Hassan who was representing Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azlan Man said a total of 490 athletes, former athletes, state leaders, government servants, non-governmental organisation, students and disabled groups will take part in the Perlis-level torch run.

He said it will kick off at Padang Besar followed by Kangar and Arau before the torch was passed over to the Kedah representative at the border.
