(Archery) M'sia beat Mexico to score bronze at Archery World Cup meet in US

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia clinched the bronze medal in the men's recurve team competition at the Archery World Cup meet in Salt Lake City, the United States, on Sunday after beating Mexico 6-2.

The national trio of Khairul Anuar Mohamad, Haziq Kamaruddin and Akmal Nor Hasrin posted a 54-50, 51-54, 55-53, 54-52 win for Malaysia's first medal in the event since 2013.

Russia defeated Taiwan 5-1 in the final for the gold medal.

Malaysia last stood on the podium in Medellin, Colombia four years ago after reaching the final, when they were beaten by Mexico.

Having upset 2016 Rio Olympic team silver medallists the United States in the first round and Britain in the quarter-finals, Malaysia finished the competition on a high by overcoming Mexico's Luis Alvarez, Ernesto Boardman and Juan Rene Serrano.

The medal capped a successful outing for Akmal, who reached the quarter-finals of the individual competition for the first time in five World Cup outings since 2016.
