Malaysian Open athletics: Hassan Saaid of Maldives wins top spot in men's 100m, Siti Fatima Mohamad bags top spot in women's 100m

KUALA LUMPUR: Hassan Saaid of the Maldives won the men's 100m final at the Malaysian Open athletics championships on Monday, disappointing a large field of local runners.

The event was missing national record holder Khairul Hafiz Jantan as Saaid came out tops in in 10.49 seconds with Malaysians Haiqal Hanafi and Badrul Hisyam Manap clocking 10.55s and 10.62s for second and third respectively.

Nixson Kennedy, the second fastest runner in the country this year, was fourth in 10.67s.

"I'm not happy with the time because I did 10.30 at the Thailand Open recently," said Saaid at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

"I know some of the runners here because I used to train in Malaysia so I'm quite familiar with this environment."

Siti Fatima Mohamad emerged the women's 100m winner in 11.91 seconds to edge teammate S. Komalam Shally into second with 11.97s, while Eloiza Luzon of the Philippines finished third in 11.99s.

"I'm not really happy with the time and I think I still have a lot of work to do. Not having a heat before the final affected my rhythm a bit," said Fatima, who is vying with Komalam for the second 100m spot at the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games next month.

Triple jumper Hakimi Ismail missed the final chance to qualify for next month's World Championships despite winning his event.

Hakimi needed to clear 16.80 metres to make the trip to London but instead had to be satisfied with a winning jump of 16.33m.

National record holder Yap Sean Yee won the women's high jump by clearing 1.72 metres, R. Kirthana claimed a win in the women's triple jump with a 13.18m effort, while Ashraf Saipu Rahman edged Norshaiee Md Shah on countback for victory in the men's high jump after both cleared 2.11m.
