KL2017: Benjamin fulfils family destiny in securing men's double trap shooting gold

KUALA LUMPUR: Benjamin Khor achieved what his father and former national shooter Edward Khor could not do, by winning the men's double trap shooting Sea Games gold medal at the Subang Shooting Range today.

It was a close tussle between Benjamin and compatriot and 15-year-old Abraham Eng, with the latter leading in the opening rounds.

However, Benjamin rose to the occasion and shot 71 out of 80 targets to win the gold, while Abraham, who was in tears after his final attempt, managed a 66 total.

Thailand's Sirawit Temmart took bronze with a 44 series.

"I owe my victory to my father. My dad did not achieve it in his three previous attempts in the Sea Games," said the 24-year-old Benjamin.

"Son, I love you..."..this is what he said to me after my final shot.

"I knew everyone, including Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, would be here for my event, and to win in front of them is a great honour."

Double trap was not included in the Sea Games for the last 10 years, with Edward being Malaysia's last winner with a bronze medal at the 2005 Manila Games.

Abraham was understandably sad and was in tears when he spoke to the press.

"I was in the lead, but i lost..it is my first Sea Games.

"It is only a small event...I want to be the world champion," said Abraham.
