KL2017: Weightlifter Fazrul breaks national record en route to silver finish

KUALA LUMPUR: The national weightlifting squad ended their campaign at the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games (KL2017) with a silver medal and a new national record through Mohamad Fazrul Azrie Mohdad in the 85 kilogramme class.

Fazrul managed 182kg in the clean and jerk to erase his own national record of 181kg, which he had set at the Islamic Games in Azerbaijan in May, and 141kg in the snatch at the Malaysia International Trade & Exhibition Centre (MITEC).

The 22-year-old's combined 323kg was enough to see him finish second behind Pornchai Lobsi of Thailand who won gold on an impressive 337kg.

Vietnam's Hoang Tan Tai, who was just 1kg behind Fazrul, took the silver.

Fazrul said he felt relieved to clinch the silver.

"I had suffered from shoulder and knee injuries recently and it took some time for me to settle today," said Fazrul.

"I was determined to do it, I really wanted to win a medal on my first Sea Games appearance. I am really happy I could do it."

Prior to the competition, Fazrul was only expected to win a bronze medal.

The national weightlifting squad's only other medal at KL2017 was also a silver won by Loro Welkinson Peuji in the 77kg division.
