Sea Games, Agong's Cup winners to show up at EduCity Johor Rugby Championship

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Malaysian rugby fans in Johor are in for a treat as gold medal winners in the Sea Games and Agong's Cup will make a special appearance at the EduCity Johor Rugby Championship 2017 starting tomorrow.

The sporting event is organised by Iskandar Investment Bhd (IIB) in collaboration with the Johor Rugby Association (JRU). It will be held in conjunction with the EduCity Johor Rugby Carnival.

A total of 16 school rugby teams from all over the country will be competing in various age categories such as the Under-11, Under-14 and Under-16.

Among the participating teams are Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar from Johor Baru, Malay College Kuala Kangsar, Victoria Institution and KL Saracens both from Kuala Lumpur and the Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) Vikings of Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

IIB president and chief executive officer Datuk Khairil Anwar Ahmad said the event will be held at the state-of-the-art and uniquely designed EduCity Stadium in Iskandar Puteri.

“The high prize money RM2,000 for the inter-school competition is a reflection of our commitment to promote rugby.” he said.

Johor Rugby Association president Mohd Noorazam Osman hoped the competition provided a platform for rugby development to flourish in Johor and subsequently the entire country.

“We hope that this yearly event, with our motto of bringing the game of rugby to the rakyat, will help to develop the grassroot programmes for rugby development here in Johor and in Malaysia,” said Noorazam.
