Asian, Commonwealth Games a possibility for Latif

KUALA LUMPUR: After competing at the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games last month, Paralympic and World Champion long jumper Abdul Latif Romly may also compete at the Commonwealth and Asian Games next year.

His coach Syahrul Amri Suhaimi said it should not be a problem as it does not clash with any other events for Latif next year.

"There are no other major competitions besides the Asian Para Games as the next World Championships will only be held in 2019," said Amri.

"What we are unsure of now is the qualifying standards (for Asian and Commonwealth Games). What I know is that they are quite tough, especially for the Commonwealth Games.

"Latif has been troubled by injury this year and his seasons' best is only 7.40m.

"However, if he can stay injury free for a long time, he will improve.

"Regardless, he needs to beat his personal best of 7.60m if he is to qualify."

Amri admitted that it has taken some time for Latif, who has struggled with an ankle injury, to recover and is yet to be at 100 per cent.

Latif who, as expected, delivered the long jump T20 (learning disability) gold at the Kuala Lumpur Asean Games has been given time off to recover and will only return to training at the end of next month.
