(Hockey) UniKL signs quality foreign players for MHL

KUALA LUMPUR: UniKL have signed six foreign players to boost their chances of winning titles in the Malaysian Hockey League, which starts next month.

Terengganu Hockey Team (THT) and KL Hockey Club (KLHC) dominated proceedings last season.

UniKL have signed Australian internationals in Glenn Turner, Kieran Gowrers and Tim Deavin.

Turner was a member of the Australian team that won gold medals at the 2010 and 2014 World Cup editions.

The club have also hired Ireland goalkeeper David Harte and two former Dutch internationals in Sander van Wink and Jeroen Hertzberger.

Harte, 29, helped Ireland take the bronze medal at the European Championships in London in 2015.

Hertzberger, 31, was a member of the Dutch team that won silver at the 2014 World Cup.

“ We are fortunate to get the services of these players and credit goes to the management as they planned the signings early,” said UniKL coach Arul Selvaraj.

“ We are looking forward to a good season and preparations have started with the local players. The foreign signings are expected to report after Christmas.”

On the local front, UniKL have the services of national players Marhan Jalil and Najmi Farizal along with Joel Samuel van Huizen.

THT, KLHC, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Maybank and Thunderbolts make up the teams for MHL’s Premier League.
