Asum include diver Wendy Ng in their Commonwealth Games' provisional list

KUALA LUMPUR: The Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia (ASUM) have listed diver Wendy Ng in the provisional list for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April, even though no verdict has been reached for her doping offence.

ASUM's assistant secretary May Tan said Wendy’s inclusion will depend on the verdict.

"We have already submitted an appeal to world body FINA. As for now, we are just waiting to hear from them.

“However, Wendy has been listed in our provisional list for the Gold Coast assignment,” said May at Monday’s Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) selection committee meeting for the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.

Wendy tested positive for the banned substance sibutramine, a stimulant commonly found in slimming products but is on the banned list of substances by the World Anti Doping Agency, at last year’s KL Sea Games.

Based on previous cases, athletes usually escape with a light suspension for sibutramine.

Should Wendy serve a ban no longer than six months, she would still be able to compete in Gold Coast.

Apart from Wendy, ASUM also named 12 divers for the Gold Coast assignment, and 14 athletes for the Asian Games in Indonesia later this year.

May also confirmed that Australian diving coach Christian Brooker is already in town.

"He (Brooker) has arrived, but he has yet to start work officially as he is still waiting for his work permit,” she added.
