Husniah, Hup Wei win gold in Indonesia

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia won two gold and one bronze in the opening day of the Pre-Asian Games athletics competition in Jakarta.

Lee Hup Wei (men's long jump) and Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli (women's 100m) won a gold each in their respective events while Rayzam Shah Wan Sofian finished third in the men's 100m hurdles.

Hup Wei took gold with a 2.19m clearance, followed by Taiwan's Hsiang Chun-Hsien (2.10m) and Indonesia's Rizky Ghusyafa Pratama (2.10m).

In the women's 100m, Zaidatul clocked 11.82sec for the title, finishing ahead of Hong Kong's Lam On Ki (11.96s) and Indonesia's Yuliana Yuliana (12.06s).

National coach M. Balamurugan said Zaidatul's win augurs well ahead of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

"It is a good start. She is using the meet to prepare for the Commonwealth Games," he said.

In the men's 100m hurdles, Rayzam Shah Wan Sofian finished the race in 14.01s for the bronze medal.

Hong Kong's Chung Wang Chan (13.93s) took top spot, followed by Taiwan's Wei Ting Yang (13.99s).

The meet ends on Wednesday.
