Malaysia go down to India

GOLD COAST: The national men's hockey team are virtually out of the Commonwealth Games semi-finals following a 2-1 defeat to India in a Pool B match at the Gold Coast Hockey Stadium on Tuesday.

Harmanpreet Singh was India's toast with a brace in the third and 44th minutes, both from penalty corners.

Forward Fitri Saari responded for Malaysia by converting a Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin Tengku Abdul Jalil pass in the 16th minute.

The win has guaranteed India, with seven points, a semi-final spot.

It was Malaysia's second defeat in three matches.

Malaysia's semi-final hopes will depend on whether Wales' deny England victory in another pool match later on Tuesday.

Stephen Van Huizen's side will complete their pool fixture against Pakistan, who have three draws, on Wednesday.
