Mitchell Cheah benefits under Alex Yoong

KUALA LUMPUR: Up and coming Mitchell Cheah has revealed that working with former Formula One and Le Mans driver Alex Yoong has helped him become a much more confident racer.

Mitchell, who races for Liqua Moly Team Engstler, made a dream start to his rookie season in the TCR Asia Series by winning the second race at the season-opening round in Sepang earlier this month.

The 20-year-old has been coached by Alex, who currently heads Sepang International Circuit's (SIC) driver development programme, since January.

"I have been sharing my data with Alex during my races and he has given me a lot of advice on where I can do better," said Mitchell.

"We have been working together since the start of the year. He has given me the confidence to become a better driver. He believes I can do it.

"I tried his advice and it has made a big difference. I am definitely more confident now."

The second round of the series will be held on June 1-3 at the Buriram circuit in Thailand, a track Mitchell has never raced before.

"I have never competed there before so it will be a completely new experience for me," added Mitchell.

"Team confidence is high at the moment, not just me but all three drivers in the team.

"Hopefully I can continue to do well. Obviously, the target is to win."

He is racing alongside two other drivers German Luca Engstler and Diego Moran of Ecuador in the Engstler team.

Mitchell currently leads the overall standings with 47 points after the two races at Sepang.
