Former MASCA president cleared of any wrongdoing

KUALA LUMPUR: The issue of claims of misappropriation of funds involving the former president of the Malaysian Canoe Association (MASCA), Datuk S. Subramanian, has finally been resolved with the association announcing that they are satisfied with the explanation that has been given.

This matter was confirmed by MASCA deputy president, Datuk Michael Wong during a press conference held here earlier today (Friday).

“After listening to Subramaniam’s explanation and from a few other parties involved, MASCA is satisfied with the explanation given by Subramaniam and would like to express gratitude and appreciation for the cooperation given throughout the internal audit process.

“We also found out that all the transactions were for the association even though problems arose from how the money was withdrawn after MASCA’s annual general meeting,” he said.

Earlier, on January 24 (Thursday), MASCA gave a notice period of seven days to their former president to explain withdrawals and transactions of money belonging to the association carried out by Subramaniam when he was no longer MASCA president.

MASCA claimed that it involved three questionable transactions on different dates with a total amount of RM14,662.

Meanwhile, Subramaniam, who was also present at the said press conference to clear his name of any wrongdoing, said that he had to do so because it was for payments that needed to be made in terms of staff salary payments as well as cost incurred for the past Annual General Meeting (AGM).

“We actually closed the accounts on September 30 and carried out the AGM on November 17, so within that period there were a couple of incurred costs that needed to be settled.

“It involved salary payment for the executive secretary and to bear the cost of hosting the AGM. And actually they could have just asked me directly, so perhaps this is a technical error,” he quipped.
