Give me the right to select exponents, says karate coach

KOTA KINABALU: National karate coach Ali Reza Soulymani wants total control over the selection of exponents for competitions in his hope to help the country regain its glory days in the sport.

Karate used to contribute medals in several important assignments, including the Asian Games, but has failed to deliver in recent times.

The Iranian's comments indicate that there has been interferences from other parties in the selection of athletes.

"If I unearth a talent, indirectly the exponent will come under my wings.

"That's why I need to identify exponents who can accept my system. They need to listen to my instructions, not others," said Ali Reza during the Asian Junior Championships at the Likas Stadium here on Sunday.

Karate is now going through a transition period, and it is focused on grassroots development.

Malaysia's top exponents are S. Prem Kumar, R. Sharmendran and Syakilla Salny Jefry Krisnan.
