Boxer Fuad ready to do battle at Philippines Sea

BOXER Fuad Redzuan is mentally prepared to face his opponents both in and out of the ring at the Philippines Sea Games later this year.

Biased judging is Fuad’s biggest fear as judges tend to favour the host nation in the Sea Games.

Fuad said he will have little margin for error if he is to defend his Under-49kg gold medal.

“I have been in boxing for a long time, and I understand well that if we face the home nation’s boxers, the decisions will always go their way unless we knock them out,” said the 28-year-old yesterday.

“It’s a subjective sport, like it or not we have to knock out our opponents or dominate the bout,” said Fuad, who will be competing in his sixth edition on Nov 30-Dec 11.

Boxers from Thailand and the Philippines are expected to dominate the Sea Games boxing event.

The national squad will head to Kazakhstan on Oct 15 for a month-long training-cum-competition stint as part of their preparation for the Sea Games.

A three-medal target has been set for the Sea Games squad.

Fuad, Arfiqanie Ahmad Anshori (Under-60kg) and Khir Akyazlan Azmi (Under-81kg) are listed under category A for the Sea Games while James Wong (Under-52kg) and Aswan Che Azmi (Under-75kg) will be competing under category B.
