Holloway expects keglers to strike back

NATIONAL coach Holloway Cheah is confident his charges will return to their best in next month’s Asian Championships in Kuwait and the Philippines Sea Games on Nov 30-Dec 11 following the disappointment at the recent Women’s World Championships in Las Vegas.

The coach has yet to finalise his squads for both competitions as the official lane patterns have not been released yet.

Holloway said: “I am confident we will bounce back and win medals in the upcoming competitions.

“In bowling, it is not all about selecting your best bowlers for a meet. A coach needs to analyse the lane patterns and also test their bowlers on them first before finalising a team.

“The Sea Games will be tough. Indonesia have a good bowler in Tannya Roumimper while Singapore have always been our rivals.

“However, I am confident we will return with medals from the Philippines.

A total of nine (men and women’s singles, doubles, team and masters along with mixed doubles) events will be contested in the Sea Games.

In the 2017 Kuala Lumpur edition, Malaysia were overall champions with a haul of seven gold, four silver and three bronze.

For this year’s edition, the National Sports Council have set a target of four gold medals.

On why Malaysia failed to win a medal at the world meet, Holloway added: “To be honest, we didn’t do that bad in Las Vegas.

“Yes, we didn’t win a medal but if you look at the scores closely, we were in the game with the rest, especially in the doubles and team event.

“Due to some simple mistakes, we fell behind going into the last games and that cost us a top-four finish,” he added.

Only eight bowlers (four men and four women) will make the trip to the Philippines.
