KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s S. Sivasangari caused a major upset at the Women’s World Championship in Cairo yesterday.
World No 48 Sivasangari stunned World No. 8 Amanda Sobhy of the United States in the first round.
The 20-year-old Malaysian carved out a sensational 9-11,11-9,6-11,12-10,11-6 win over the 26-year-old Amanda.
Sivasangari will meet World No 29 Milou van der Heijden of the Netherlands in the second round tomorrow.
Kedah’s World No. 89 Aifa Azman made it a memorable double for Malaysia by ousting World No. 17 Joey Chan of Hong Kong 14-12, 7-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-8 in the first round.
