Netball team behaving like champions

National netball coach Tracey Robinson is happy with the way her team’s title defence is going at the Philippines Sea Games.

Having beaten Thailand 62-42 in their opening game on Monday and Philippines 88-25 on Tuesday, Malaysia will take on a gritty Brunei today before squaring off against arch-rivals Singapore tomorrow in the round-robin competition.

But Tracey knows that tougher tests await them.

“No game here is easy, you have to go out there and work hard for 60 minutes,” she said.

“The Philippines have really improved a lot and we also had to really raise our game against Thailand to beat them.

“I’m happy with where we are, but it’s not the final yet.

“We still have a fair bit of work to do (to get there).

“We watched Brunei play (and lose 63-28 to Thailand on Tuesday) and they played really well. They are a really short and sharp side.

“Our players are a bit taller than theirs, so it will be about maintaining our shape and making sure we stay disciplined.”

The top four teams at the end of round-robin phase will progress to the semi-finals this weekend.

Malaysia won their first netball gold in 16 years at the 2017 KL Games.
