Sailor Khairul marooned in his living room

Sailor Khairulnizam Mohd Afendy, who has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, is on the same course with the organisers’ decision to postpone the Games to next year.

Khairulnizam said most of the athletes have been unable to train properly due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“In terms of preparations for the Olympic Games, the whole world is facing the same problem.

“I have been training at home but it has only been limited to fitness exercises.

The sailor hopes to get out of his living room (due to the MCO) and into the sea as soon as possible.

“The sooner the Covid-19 pandemic is overcome, the faster I can start preparing for the Olympics.

“Most of the major competitions are held in Europe. If this situation

continues, my preparations may be limited to only in Malaysia where there are few competitions.”

Khairulnizam, who is studying for a sports science degree at UiTM Perlis, said he is aiming for a top-20 finish in the men's laser class in Tokyo.

The 27-year-old, who will be competing in his third Olympics, finished 28th at the 2016 Rio Games. He came in 47th on his Olympic debut in London in 2012.
