Switching between software and springboard

For national diver Chew Yiwei, making it to his first Olympic Games remains his top priority.

But with the Covid-19 situation still lingering and largely affecting the diving calendar, the 25-year-old has also turned his focus on completing his studies.

The Selangor-born has started an internship as a software engineer as he looks to graduate before the Tokyo Olympics next year.

"I'm finally getting the time to get this done because I've been studying for five years already, and I've been putting this on the backlog for so long," said Yiwei, a computer science student of Imperium International College (formerly known as HELP College).

"I'm not getting any younger, and for so long, I've been focusing on training and competitions.

"So I'm excited about this internship period because it's my final project before I graduate next year.

"As it is currently working from home period, I work for four hours in the morning and then dedicate the rest of the day to training."

The good balance is certainly working out for Yiwei, who did well at the recent Malaysia International Online Diving competition.

Yiwei finished second in the 3m springboard individual event behind teammate Ooi Tze Liang.

"The online dive meet was a success.

"I felt the competition vibes, and I'm quite happy with the outcome.

"It's even better considering I slipped and fell on the board during training a month ago and was in quite a bit of pain, but I still pulled off my dives.

"I think I am on the right track ahead of the World Cup in April," Yiwei added.

The World Cup, scheduled on April 18-23, is the last qualifying meet for the Olympics.

And Yiwei, a bronze medallist (3m springboard individual event) at the 2018 Indonesia Asian Games, will be hoping to make another big splash.

To date, only four Malaysians — Pandelela Rinong, Leong Mun Yee, Wendy Ng and Nur Dhabitah Sabri — have qualified for the Olympics.
