Qabil galloping towards Tokyo

Equestrian rider Qabil Ambak is set to become the first Malaysian to compete in the sport at the Olympics.

Qabil, 41, finished third in the Asia-Oceania rankings when the Olympic qualification period ended in 2019. Only the top two qualify for the Tokyo Games. One of the two qualifiers, however, has withdrawn, and subsequently Qabil is promoted to that slot.

There are, however, a few conditions Qabil must fulfil before he can compete in Tokyo.

"I was just informed that I have qualified on merit for the Olympic dressage event by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM)," said Qabil yesterday.

"I was initially the reserve rider (for Asia-Oceania) but then one of the two confirmed riders can't go for the games.

"It's a dream come true for me to qualify as I have been trying to do so for some time now. I am really grateful to get this opportunity.

"But to be eligible, I must meet FEI's (world body) requirements and compete in a competition this year, among others (requirements).

"FEI have given a deadline until June 21 to do so. This will be challenging under the current circumstances due to the pandemic. To go abroad for a competition and get the necessary paperwork done is not a simple process.

"Hopefully OCM can help request an extension on the deadline from FEI."

Qabil is arguably the finest dressage rider Malaysia has ever produced. He has won three Asian Games silver medals, and is also a former Sea Games champion in a career spanning two decades.
