'Please don't disturb me'

DIVER Cheong Jun Hoong is just relieved that her Olympic dream is not over yet.

She now wants to focus on training rather than getting distracted by unnecessary issues.

The 2017 world champion is feeling optimistic again after going through a roller-coaster ride of emotions last week.

The 31-year-old was initially left in the dumps after Fina, the world governing body for aquatics, ruled her out of the Tokyo Olympics.

This was despite Jun Hoong overcoming the odds to finish in the top 18 in the women's 10m platform individual event at the Diving World Cup in Tokyo last month.

Fina had initially awarded the top-12 divers Olympic berths.

However, the world body made a U-turn on their decision following an appeal by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), and Jun Hoong was granted an Olympic slot on merit.

The Perak-born, who missed three years of action due to knee surgery in 2018, is now just more focused than ever to make the best of this second opportunity.

"I am relieved that the Olympic quota has finally been finalised even though the process took a bit of time," said Jun Hoong.

"I definitely have to thank the OCM, the Sports Ministry, the National Sports Council, the National Sports Institute and Malaysia Swimming (MS) for making it possible, as well as everyone else who has been supporting me.

"I am still very capable of fighting hard and doing the country proud. I am also excited to make an impression in Tokyo.

"But right now, what I need to do is to concentrate on my training.

"After all, there are only three more weeks before the Olympics, and I need to focus on my training so that I can give my best for the country," added Jun Hoong, who will compete in the 10m platform individual event in Tokyo.

Jun Hoong's inclusion means Malaysia will head to Tokyo with five secured quotas.

The other Olympic-bound divers are Pandelela Rinong, Leong Mun Yee, Wendy Ng and Nur Dhabitah Sabri. Pandelela, who won the World Cup gold medal last month, is the only diver set for two events.

The Sarawak-born will compete in the platform individual and synchro (with Mun Yee) events.

Wendy and Nur Dhabitah will compete in the 3m springboard individual event.

The diving competition will be held at the Olympic Aquatic Centre in Tokyo on July 25-Aug 7.
