Jun Hoong to save her best for last

Cheong Jun Hoong is already feeling the pressure of expectations ahead of the Tokyo Games, but coach Yang Zhuliang believes she will be stronger and meaner in her third Olympic outing.

Jun Hoong is all alone in training under Zhuliang as her peers train under Christian Brooker.

However, this has not deterred the 31-year-old, who is determined to make headlines and achieve the contingent's target of one medal in diving.

Jun Hoong will compete in the women's 10m platform in Tokyo. However, all eyes will, instead, be on teammate Pandelela Rinong, who won gold at the Diving World Cup in May in the absence of Chinese divers.

Zhuliang admits that Jun Hoong is feeling some pressure, but he believes it is normal for an athlete heading to the Olympics.

"She is going to Tokyo as a former world champion and a reigning Olympic silver medallist, so, of course, there is pressure.

"I have told her to relax and focus on training. It is normal to feel that way as everyone is trying to achieve perfection at the Olympics.

"Every athlete wants to do well in the Olympics. Her training programme is intense with a lot of routine work. At this stage, she is ironing out whatever shortcomings before the big day.

"I have also reminded her to forget about things outside of her event, and just focus on her goals. That is the best policy because if you have problems, you will never succeed," said Zhuliang.

China are the favourites to win gold and silver in the event through 15-year-old Chen Yuxi, who scored 439 points at the 2019 World Championships, and Quan Hongchan.

"To beat China and win a gold medal? You have to be perfect in all aspects of your dives. Diving is about perfection, and my goal is to help Jun Hoong achieve it.

"Will she win a medal? I do not want to add pressure. I only want her to produce her best in Tokyo," said the China-born coach.

The Ipoh-born Jun Hoong initially thought she had qualified for the Olympics automatically when she topped the women's 10m platform event at the World Cup in May.

However, Fina, the world body for aquatics, changed the ruling stating that only the top 12 in the semi-finals would qualify.

Jun Hoong had given her all in the preliminary round and could not perform in the semi-finals, finishing last in the 18-diver event.

However, Fina made a U-turn and awarded her an Olympic slot on merit after the Olympic Council of Malaysia had appealed on her behalf.

"The strategy for the World Cup was to just qualify for the Olympics. She performed her 'A' game in the preliminary round, and could not perform in the semi-finals.

"For the Olympics, we will use a different strategy. In Tokyo, Jun Hoong will be aiming to do just enough in the preliminary round and semi-final to qualify for the 12-diver final.

"She is going to pace herself accordingly without revealing too much until the final," he added.

Jun Hoong and Zhuliang will leave for the Tokyo Games on July 25.
