Rachel storms into World second round

Women's national No 3 Rachel Arnold roared to life as she stormed into the second round of the World Squash Championships in the United States.

The World No 44 was on song as she carved out an impressive 11-8, 11-8, 11-13, 11-9 win over 29th seed Farida Mohamed in the first round at the University Club of Chicago on Thursday.

The 25-year-old plays Nadine Shahin of Egypt in her first-ever world meet second-round appearance.

Nadine, the 15th seed, booked her spot by beating compatriot Mena Nasser 11-4, 11-7, 11-6.

"It definitely feels good to get a win," said Rachel.

"It was not an easy match as I had to push myself hard to earn my second-round slot.

"I'm looking forward to a good match with Nadine. If I can keep up the same momentum from today, I believe I can score my second win here."

National No 1 Low Wee Wern also progressed into the second round by overcoming Switzerland's Nadia Pfister 11-2, 11-4, 11-2 in just 20 minutes.

The World No 24 next takes on 12th seed and crowd favourite Olivia Clyne, who defeated another Swiss player Cindy Merlo 11-3, 11-6, 11-5.

In the men's event, national No 3 Syafiq Kamal, who was promoted from the reserve list at the eleventh hour, saw his challenge come to a quick end.

The Kelantan-born had no answer as he lost 11-4, 11-5, 11-3 to veteran Spaniard Borja Golan in the first round.
