No Dubai trip for keglers who decline bubble training

Subject to approval, the national bowling team will return to the lanes for centralised training next week.

The Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) will use the quarantine-based programme to prepare the bowlers for the IBF World Championships in Dubai on Nov 6-26.

MTBC secretary-general Maradona Chok said: "We have discussed this with the National Sports Council (NSC), and if everything goes well, the team will start training on Aug 26.

"However, they will all have to report and be based at the athletes's hostel (Casa) in Bukit Jalil for the quarantine-based training programme.

"For now, most bowlers have agreed to this arrangement, but we are still waiting for confirmation from two of them who are with families."

Tough as it may be, the MTBC will only allow those who agree to the quarantine-based training programme to compete at the World Championships this year.

The national body will likely name eight bowlers each for the men's and women's squads.

"Yes, only those who agree to the quarantine-based training will be named for the world meet. This means even the elite seniors must be based at Casa," added Maradona.

The World Championships, which will be held together with the IBF Para World Championships and the IBF Masters World Championships, will be the first international tournament for some bowlers, who last competed at the 2019 Philippines Sea Games.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, training has also been on and off at the Sunway Mega Lanes, which serves as the national training centre.

MTBC added that all coaches — Gerald Samuel, Wendy Chai, Ben Heng and Holloway Cheah — for the World Championships must also be under the quarantine bubble.
