Three-gold target is realistic

The Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) will not review their three-gold medal target for the Tokyo Paralympics on Aug 24-Sept 5.

PCM president Datuk Seri Megat D Shahriman Zaharudin believes the target, which equals the medal haul at the 2016 Rio Games, is realistic.

The target was announced by former Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican last month.

Reezal, together with other cabinet members, resigned on Monday.

"The official target remains as it was set after considering the Covid-19 situation and the performances of our athletes and their rivals," said Shahriman, also the Chef de Mission, yesterday.

"Of course, there is a possibility we may win more than three gold medals, and that would be a bonus. However, I do not want to be overconfident and place unnecessary pressure on our athletes.

"We will focus on the core (medal prospects), but for the others, we want them to go beyond what they have achieved in the past.

"We want them to go as far as they can and finish as high as possible in their respective competitions.

"I don't see the point in aiming for personal bests but end up going out in the first round."

Sprinter Ridzuan Puzi, long jumper Abdul Latif Romly and shot putter Ziyad Zolkefli, who all won gold in Rio, are contenders again in their respective events.

Shuttlers Cheah Liek Hou and Didin Taresoh, powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin and archer S. Suresh are also expected to challenge for honours.

Shahriman was speaking after launching the WeThe15 'The Malaysian Way' campaign, which is the Malaysian chapter of the WeThe15 movement initiated by the International Paralympic Committee.

The campaign aims to "be the biggest ever human rights movement", representing the 15 per cent of the world's population estimated by the UN to have a disability.

To mark the occasion, the KL Tower was lit up in purple yesterday. Purple is associated with the disabled community.
