Powerlifter Yee Khie wins silver at Tokyo Paralympics

KUALA LUMPUR: The national powerlifting squad secured Malaysia a second medal at the Tokyo Paralympics, this time through Jong Yee Khie, who took silver in the men's Under-107kg class on Monday.

Yee Khie failed to clear 230kg in his first attempt at the Tokyo International Forum.

However, he bounced back and successfully lifted 237kg on his second attempt to move comfortably into second.

The 32-year-old then set the bar at 245kg in his third attempt in his bid to match the the leader but failed. His 237kg effort was, however, enough to secure him the silver.

World record holder Sodnompiljee Enkhbayar of Mongolia took the win with a new Paralympic record of 245kg, erasing the former mark of 238kg set by Greece's Pavlos Mamalos in Rio.

Iranian Saman Razi completed the podium with a 231kg effort.

Yee Khie, a two-time Commonwealth Games medallist, has been in solid form this season and had also taken silver at the Dubai World Cup in June with a best effort of 239kg.

Earlier on Saturday, Yee Khie's teammate Bonnie Bunyau Gustin had won gold in the men's Under-72kg class in a new Paralympic record of 228kg.
