Sabah rugby star Helberth dies at 33

IT was a sad day for the Sabah rugby fraternity as they tragically lost Helberth Jemlit to dengue in Sandakan on Tuesday. He was 33.

Helberth, who also played for Eagles Rugby Club (ERC), leaves behind a wife and three children. His funeral will be held in Beluran tomorrow.

"It is a very sad day for all of us. Unfortunately, the dengue fever had led to meningitis, and Helberth passed away," said ERC deputy president Dr K. H Tan yesterday.

"He was first discovered when we were conducting a talent identification programme in Sipitang. He was only 16 at the time.

"He played a key role in five of Sabah's victories in the Agong's Cup and had also won three or four Super League titles with ERC.

"He was also one of three Sabah players in the national team alongside Nathanael Tan and Badrul Muktee."

Nathanael paid tribute to his former teammate.

"He was a person who would put his body on the line and shed blood for his brothers in the field," said Nathanael.

"He was humble and also respected by the entire rugby fraternity in Sabah."

ERC coaching director Brad Mika echoed Nathanael's sentiments.

"I will always have a special place in my heart for Helberth. I will never forget everything he did for me as a coach," said Mika.
