Quiet start for Malaysia in petanque

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's campaign in the men's and women's petanque shooting events came to an early end at the Sea Games today.

Nurul Azwan Ahmad Temizi and Nurul Balqis Fuzian, who scored 26 and 24 respectively, failed to advance after both finished sixth in the elimination rounds at the Hanoi Sports Training and Competition Centre.

Coach Zanilisa Mohamed is however unfazed by the results, saying they are eying medals in the doubles and triples events.

"The shooting event depends on a lot of the form of the athlete on the day itself, and it is not an easy event to predict," said Zanilisa.

"Our target is the doubles event which starts tomorrow in which we are targeting gold.

"Our focus from the beginning has been on the men's and women's doubles as well as the mixed triples."

"We are fielding very experienced players in these categories. They have competed in the Sea Games two or three times before."

Malaysia won one gold, one silver and two bronze at the 2019 Manila Sea Games.
