It's 39 gold for Malaysia at Hanoi Sea Games

HANOI: The Malaysian contingent concluded their participation in the Hanoi Sea Games just shy of 40 gold medals after adding two more on the last day of competition today.

Badminton pair Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei edged Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See 15-21, 21-19, 21-13 in an all Malaysian mixed doubles final.

It was the first time Malaysia won the mixed doubles gold at the Sea Games in 23 years.

Muay Thai exponent Ahmad Nor Iman Aliff Rakib, who won the world junior title last year, later clinched Malaysia's 39th and final gold of the Sea Games after triumphing in the men's under-54kg class.

Ahmad is the son of former national boxer Rakib Ahmad, who won a bronze at the 1998 Commonwealth Games. Malaysia also claimed a silver medal yesterday through Nur Amisha Azrilrizal in the women's under-51kg category.

The national women's cycling team did well to win another two silver medals via Nur Aisyah Zubir in the women's individual road race and team (Aisyah Zubir, Siti Nur Adibah Akma, Nur Aisyah Munirah Chek Ramli and Ju Pha Som Net).

In the men's individual snooker final, Lim Kok Leong lost 4-2 (24-75, 88-34, 25-70, 65-48, 83-33, 67-42) to Thailand's former world No 3 James Wattana.

Sea Games debutant Hafiz Shamsuddin made his mark on the weightlifting competition by bagging bronze in the men's under-89kg category.

Football fans, however, were left to rue their luck after Malaysia lost 4-3 on penalties to Indonesia in the bronze medal playoff. The match had ended in regulation time, tied 1-1.

The official closing ceremony of the Hanoi Sea Games will be held tomorrow.
