Malaysia just aiming for tries in Birmingham

KUALA LUMPUR: The national rugby sevens squad hope to avoid a thrashing when they take on the world's best at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games on July 28-Aug 8.

Coach Saizul Hafifi Md Noor said his squad will use the outing to gauge their standard against the top teams.

The experience, he said, will be beneficial when they play in upcoming competitions, including the Hangzhou Asian Games next year.

"Fiji, New Zealand, South Africa and Scotland are among the top teams in the sevens game. And they will be playing in Birmingham.

"It is a golden opportunity to gain experience. This will help us prepare for tournaments like the Asian Games, where we will have targets to achieve."

He hopes his players will be able to at least put a few tries past their world-class opponents in Birmingham.

Malaysia made the Commonwealth Games cut after finishing second behind Sri Lanka in the Asian Seven Series last year.

"Our goal is to be as competitive as possible in every match and score as many tries.

"In Birmingham, scoring even one try will be difficult."

Malaysia are drawn with Tonga, Scotland and South Africa in the pool stage.

The rugby competition will be held at the Coventry Stadium from July 29-31.

The squad, who left for England on Saturday, will play the British Army, Fiji Barbarians, Cardiff Blues and China in a series of friendlies before the Commonwealth Games.
