Painful lesson for Imdad

BIRMINGHAM: Young boxer Imdad Ahmad Shaharom crashed out of Commonwealth Games after taking some punches and gaining invaluable lessons.

National coach Azmi Md Yunus said Imdad, who was competing in his first Commonwealth Games, gained more than losing in his quarter-final bout.

"The experience gained in his debut Games will make him a better boxer and for him to move up in other international bouts," said Azmi.

Imdad, 20, received a bye into the quarter-finals without throwing a punch. But in his 51-54kg bout at Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre, the referee had to stop the fight to prevent Scotland boxer Matthew McHale from causing more harm to the Malaysian.

"The Scot was way better compared to Imdad who lost his rhythm," said Azmi.
